“I am Reuben Barwe, ZBC News, Mbare, Harare.”

That voice raised some of us.

If you grew up watching ZTV 8pm news, you know exactly what I am talking about. Before social media, before breaking news on phones, before everyone became a commentator, there was that voice closing the bulletin with authority.

Reuben Barwe was there.

Government events, state funerals, rallies, national holidays, presidential trips, Heroes Acre, big announcements , that man reported like he was part of the furniture of Zimbabwean broadcasting.

You may like him.

You may not like him.

You may call him a state media man.

You may call him ZBC through and through.

You may even say he became one of the strongest media voices around ZANU PF politics.

But one thing you cannot deny is this:

Reuben Barwe is part of Zimbabwe’s television memory.

For decades, his voice sat in our homes at 8pm. Our parents heard it. We heard it. Even people who disagreed with ZBC still knew his sign-off word for word.

That is not a small legacy.

In another country, people would study what it means when one journalist becomes almost bigger than the newsroom itself.

So yes, if Zimbabwe ever speaks about media figures who became national symbols, Reuben Barwe’s name must be in that conversation.

National Heroes Acre?

Some will argue.

Some will laugh.

Some will agree.

But if loyalty to the state, long service, and becoming the voice of an era are part of the measurement, then Reuben Barwe has a case.

The man did not just read the news.

He became part of the way Zimbabwe heard itself.
