Tinotenda Hove – Controversial businessman and ZANU PF-linked tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo has sparked criticism after gifting a brand new vehicle to his barber in Newlands, a man identified as Nakamba, in a move many have described as extravagant amid ongoing economic challenges.
The gesture, announced by Chivayo on Friday, quickly drew attention for its tone and content, with the businessman boasting about his long-standing relationship with the barber and the cost differences in services.
In a statement, Chivayo said:
“VINTAGE BARBER SHOP pa NEWLANDS mukomana anonzi NAKAMBA anopedza ma sports… Hanzi 15 dollars hair cut ini hangu ndine munyama kwese he charges me 400 he says musoro wangu MUHOMBE… Congratulations haunga gere MBADA for 1 year 5 months worega ku komborerwa. Asangana ne FRIDAY Mukomana…”
The remarks, which mixed humour and self-praise, highlighted the personalised nature of the gift, but also triggered debate online over conspicuous displays of wealth at a time many citizens are struggling with rising costs of living.
Chivayo’s continued public displays of generosity toward individuals close to him have often divided opinion, with supporters praising his philanthropy while critics question the motives and timing of such high-profile gifts.
