Ribbon-Cutting Politics: New Maternity Unit And Buses Can’t Hide Masvingo’s Deeper Service Delivery Crisis

Tinotenda Hove – Masvingo residents were treated to another official ceremony today as Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Ezra R. Chadzamira, officially opened the Runyararo Clinic Maternity Unit and commissioned new Masvingo Public Service Vehicles.

Government statements framed the developments as a “significant boost” for maternal healthcare and public transportation, claiming they reflect commitment to improving service delivery and residents’ well-being.

But for many in Masvingo City, the fanfare raises more questions than answers.

While a new maternity unit is welcome, Runyararo Clinic has for years struggled with staff shortages, drug stockouts, and dilapidated infrastructure. Opening one unit does little to address systemic underfunding of public health facilities across the province, where expectant mothers still travel long distances and pay out-of-pocket for basic supplies.

The commissioning of new public service vehicles also comes amid persistent complaints about unreliable, expensive, and inadequate urban transport. Without a clear plan for maintenance, route coverage, and affordable fares, critics argue the new buses risk becoming another short-term political showcase rather than a sustainable solution.

The event highlights a familiar pattern: high-profile handovers that generate headlines, while broader issues of healthcare resourcing, transport policy, and devolution funding remain unresolved.

Until the Government addresses staffing, equipment, and operational budgets behind these projects, residents say such launches will do little to change daily realities on the ground.
