Dema- A unified chorus of support marked the Parliament of Zimbabwe public hearings on the Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3 on Monday, as speakers in Seke, Dema voiced unanimous backing for the proposed legislation without a single dissenting opinion.

Throughout the proceedings, speaker after speaker endorsed the bill and all its provisions, with particular emphasis on the proposed changes to the election cycle. Residents argued that extending the term for elected leaders would provide the continuity necessary to focus on development initiatives.

No opposing views were registered during the public hearing.

Bishop Garikai Francis who represented National Multiple Economic Dialogue (NAMFED) said the church supported the bill in accordance with the word of God.

“The word of God says my people perish because of lack of knowledge We are supporting this bill to enable the President and legislators to fulfil on their mandate towards vision 2030.”

Several speakers also emphasised that focus should be on development and peace, all of which were disrupted by elections every 5 years.

Tobias Mubai said he supported the bill because the term extension allowed the President to finish national development projects.

The bill now continues its journey through the public consultation process as Parliament gathers input from across the country.
