Tinotenda Hove – Freedom Fighters for Change leader Michael Makaza on Sunday issued a pointed warning to political rivals he accuses of attempting to imitate his party’s identity, declaring that the colour purple is synonymous with his movement and its political message.
Makaza, whose party has increasingly associated itself with the colour purple as a symbol of what he calls a new political awakening, suggested that some parties were now shifting their colours in a bid to tap into the growing visibility of his brand.
In a statement, Makaza said, “Purple rain is coming… Some parties are literally changing colours! Guess the grass is purple on the other side #PurpleRevolution #ColourfulPolitics A luta continua… Freedom Fighters for Change #WeMove 🇿🇼”.
He added in a follow-up message, “Purple rain is coming… Looks like some parties are jumping on the bandwagon! Purple is the new… everything, it seems Who’s next? #PurpleRevolution #OriginalityIsOverrated A luta continua… Freedom Fighters for Change #WeMove 🇿🇼”.
The opposition leader’s remarks appear to be directed at unnamed political formations that have recently adopted campaign materials or regalia featuring shades of purple, a colour Makaza insists is central to the Freedom Fighters for Change identity.
Supporters of the party have often used purple at rallies, on social media, and in campaign messaging, framing it as a symbol of transformation and what they describe as a “Purple Revolution.”
Makaza’s comments signal rising competition within the opposition political space, where branding and symbolism have become increasingly important tools in mobilising supporters and distinguishing parties from one another.
