Tinotenda Hove- Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has once again found himself at the centre of public debate after announcing that he had rewarded his personal therapist and another employee at Masawara Spa with luxury vehicles and cash.

In a social media post on Saturday, Chivayo revealed that his personal therapist, Mandy, and booking coordinator, Cathy, would each receive a Mercedes-Benz C200 and US$10,000 in recognition of their years of dedicated service.

“Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate someone who has quietly and consistently made a positive difference in my life over the past six years,” Chivayo wrote. “My heartfelt appreciation goes to Mandy, my amazing therapist at Masawara Spa, who has looked after me with exceptional professionalism, care, and dedication.”

He also praised Cathy, saying, “I also want to sincerely thank Cathy, who has handled my bookings with efficiency, patience, and a smile. Behind every great experience is a great team.”

Announcing the gifts, Chivayo said, “As a small token of my appreciation, I am delighted to gift both Mandy and Cathy a Mercedes-Benz C200 each and 10 thousand USD each.

This is my way of saying thank you for your loyalty, consistency, and outstanding service over the years.”

While some applauded Chivayo for recognising people who had served him faithfully, others questioned whether such lavish displays of wealth were appropriate at a time when Zimbabwe continues to face significant economic challenges.

Critics argue that the gifts highlight growing inequality in a country where public hospitals continue to struggle with shortages of medicines, equipment and staff, while many citizens battle poverty, unemployment and the rising cost of living.

The announcement has also revived public debate over the source of Chivayo’s wealth. Some critics allege that his close association with President Emmerson Mnangagwa has enabled him to benefit from lucrative state-linked contracts and public resources. Chivayo has consistently rejected such allegations and maintains that his wealth has been legitimately acquired.

Supporters insist that Chivayo is free to spend his personal money as he wishes, including rewarding loyal employees. However, critics contend that such extravagant gestures underscore the widening gap between Zimbabwe’s wealthy elite and ordinary citizens facing daily economic hardships.

The latest development is expected to fuel further debate over wealth, accountability and social responsibility in Zimbabwe.
