Tinotenda Hove- Masvingo Provincial Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Kramer Manyetu, has announced that the department will roll out a rabies vaccination and awareness campaign in Masvingo Urban starting on the 6th of October, with a similar exercise planned for Gutu.

This follows the confirmation of three rabies cases reported over the past two weeks in Masvingo Urban, Masvingo District, and Gutu Town — a situation that has raised public health concerns. The campaign seeks to safeguard both residents and their pets while promoting responsible pet ownership.

Dr. Manyetu emphasized the importance of compliance with Masvingo City Council bylaws, which require residents to register their pets, vaccinate them, and ensure proper care. “Residents need to understand their responsibilities as pet owners and know the council bylaws that guide pet management,” he said.

He also linked poor waste disposal practices to the rise in stray dog populations, noting that “people who throw garbage irresponsibly contribute to the growth of stray dogs, which poses a risk to public health.”

Dr. Manyetu assured the public that there are sufficient vaccine stocks for the upcoming campaign. He added that similar awareness and vaccination exercises will be extended across the province to strengthen rabies prevention.

The campaign is being conducted in partnership with the Masvingo City Council and the SPCA. It will offer free vaccinations for dogs and cats while educating residents on responsible pet care.

Dr. Manyetu also warned that individuals who fail to comply with pet management bylaws may face tougher measures, including the removal of stray animals, to ensure community safety.

Residents are urged to take part in the exercise and ensure their pets are registered and vaccinated.
