By A Correspondent -The ANC speaker of Umuziwabantu Local Municipality, Nkosiyazi Petros Shebi, is facing possible suspension following a fatal collision on the N2 that claimed the lives of two road workers.

Shebi, who is from Harding on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, was allegedly behind the wheel of a municipal Toyota Land Cruiser Prado when the accident occurred on Monday near Paddock, outside Port Shepstone.

The two victims, identified as 38-year-old Nonjabulo Mpume Langazane and 44-year-old Sindiswa Maria Mbotho, were reportedly carrying out road work along the N2 when they were struck.

Their funerals are scheduled to take place today in eZinqoleni.
The incident has also raised questions about the municipality’s rules governing the use of official vehicles.

According to the municipality, senior councillors are expected to use designated chauffeurs rather than drive municipal vehicles themselves.

Shebi has since been granted bail and is facing allegations linked to driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding at the time of the crash.
It is alleged that he lost control of the municipal vehicle while travelling along the busy N2. The section near Paddock has regular roadworks and heavy traffic, making the circumstances surrounding the collision the subject of heightened scrutiny.

The municipality is now considering disciplinary action against Shebi as questions mount over the fatal crash and the alleged breach of its vehicle-use regulations.
