Tinotenda Hove – Police in Nkayi have arrested two security guards following a tragic shooting incident at DGL5 Mine in Inyathi on 30 November 2025, which left one illegal miner dead and another seriously injured.
The suspects, Mbekhezele Ngwabi (52) and Elisha Matsvai (45), were taken into custody in connection with murder and attempted murder charges.
According to police, Ngwabi allegedly fired a 12-bore rifle, shooting Thabo Ngwenya (24) in the chest and neck. Ngwenya was rushed to hospital but died on the way. His colleague, Nkosikhona Moyo (19), was reportedly shot in the eye and left arm by Matsvai and sustained serious injuries.
The confrontation reportedly started when a group of illegal miners confronted the security guards, demanding the release of their colleague who had been detained for allegedly conducting illegal mining activities at the site.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and the two suspects are expected to appear in court soon as authorities work to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the violent encounter.
