Sports Correspondent – A football referee was brutally killed in Zambia’s Eastern Province after violence erupted during a local match in Chipangali District.
Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the death of referee Donald Tonga, who was allegedly attacked by angry players and supporters following a controversial decision during the game.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the suspects were arrested shortly after 7 PM on Friday after reportedly going into hiding.
“The suspects are assisting us with investigations as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death of the referee. More updates will be given as the case progresses,” said Mweemba.
The fatal incident happened on Thursday during a replayed football encounter between Mikango United and Leopard United at Mchenga Primary School grounds, where the teams were competing for a K5,000 cash prize.
According to reports, Tonga was officiating the match alone without assistant referees or linesmen.
Chaos reportedly broke out after the referee failed to award a foul during the first half of the match. The decision is said to have enraged some Mikango United players and sections of the crowd.
Witnesses claimed the referee was then attacked with fists, kicks, stones and sticks as violence spiralled out of control.
Tonga allegedly attempted to flee from the mob but was chased down and severely assaulted before collapsing.
He was rushed to Chamasongo Clinic, where medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.
Police officers who attended the scene reportedly found the referee lying in a pool of blood with a deep wound on the left side of his head.Authorities say investigations into the shocking incident are continuing.
