Tinotenda Hove – The Constitution Defenders Forum on Sunday issued a call for public solidarity ahead of the court appearance of its leaders, Tendai Biti and Morgan Ncube.

In a statement, the organization said, “The Constitution Defenders Forum calls upon all citizens, civil society, and defenders of constitutional democracy to attend the initial court hearing of Convener Tendai Biti and Director for Programs Morgan Ncube at the Mutare Magistrates Court, tomorrow (today) Monday, 23 March 2026 at 8:30 AM.”

The Forum described the moment as significant for Zimbabwe’s democratic processes, stating, “This is a critical moment for the rule of law and the protection of constitutionalism in Zimbabwe. The public’s presence in court is a lawful and powerful expression of solidarity, accountability, and commitment to justice.”

It further urged calm and unity among supporters, saying, “We urge all stakeholders to stand firm, remain peaceful, and demonstrate collective resolve in defending the Constitution.”
The statement concluded with a rallying call: “Let us show up. Let us stand together. Let us defend the Constitution.”

Images circulating on social media show Biti, a former Finance Minister, and Ncube in police custody following their arrest. Reports indicate they were detained after speaking out against the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which is said to seek an extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term in office to 2030.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has not yet issued an official statement regarding Biti’s detention or the charges he may be facing.
The arrests have raised concerns among observers, with some questioning, “Why is ZANU PF so afraid of people holding a simple meeting to discuss the Constitution?”
