Tinotenda Hove – The Action Democratic Movement (ADM) has issued a strong statement opposing Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, warning that the proposed changes pose a serious threat to Zimbabwe’s democracy and constitutional order.
Addressing Zimbabweans, the movement said prolonged leadership often leads to disconnection from citizens and abuse of authority. “When leaders stay in power for too long, they risk becoming detached from the people and intoxicated by authority. This is not just an African problem—it is a human problem,” the statement read.
ADM emphasized that the Constitution of Zimbabwe 2013 was designed to prevent such risks by ensuring the separation of powers. However, it warned that the proposed amendment could reverse these safeguards.
“The Constitution ensures separation of powers—so that no single individual or group can control everything. But today, through Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, we are witnessing a dangerous attempt to bring these levers of power under one roof.”
The movement highlighted the dangers of centralizing authority, stating, “The danger is simple: when power is centralized, accountability disappears. And when accountability disappears, abuse of power becomes inevitable.”
Clarifying its position, ADM said its stance is not politically motivated. “This resistance is not anti-ZANU-PF. It is pro-Constitution, pro-democracy, and pro-people.”
Raising concern over the current political climate, the group pointed to growing reports of intimidation and repression. “We are deeply disturbed by increasing reports of abductions, intimidation, and violence against those who simply express dissent,” the statement said, adding, “A government that fears its people will always try to silence them. A government that respects its people will always listen.”
The movement also addressed individuals within government, urging them to take a stand against injustice. “Silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality—it is complicity. Fear of victimization cannot be greater than the duty to protect Zimbabwe.”
In a direct message to Temba Mliswa, ADM challenged him to fully disclose information regarding alleged abuses. “If you know who is responsible for abductions and violence, why are you not exposing them fully? Selective truth is not truth—it is strategy,” the statement read. “Zimbabwe does not need commentary—it needs courage.”
Outlining its core principles, ADM reaffirmed its commitment to constitutionalism and citizen welfare. “As the Action Democratic Movement, we stand firmly for the protection of the Constitution, the preservation of democratic checks and balances, and the safety and dignity of every Zimbabwean.”
The statement concluded with a call for unity among citizens. “Do not be divided. Do not be silenced. Do not surrender your future. This is not about political parties. This is about the soul of our nation.”
“NO TO 2030. YES TO CONSTITUTIONALISM. YES TO DEMOCRACY.”
“ALUTA CONTINUA. ASIJIKI. ZIYAKHALA.”
