Tinashe Sambiri– Controversial preacher Panganai Java, popularly known as Prophet Passion, stunned many after posting a controversial message on Facebook on Sunday declaring that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was “the God of Zimbabwe.”

In the Facebook post, Prophet Passion wrote in Shona: “Mnangagwa ndiye Mwari we Zimbabwe,” which translates to “Mnangagwa is the God of Zimbabwe.”

The remarks immediately sparked fierce criticism from religious leaders, church members and social commentators, many of whom described the statement as “misplaced,” “dangerous” and “blasphemous.”

One church observer said: “No human being should be elevated to the level of God. Such statements are deeply disturbing and offensive to Christians.”

Another religious leader condemned the utterances, saying: “This is not only spiritually reckless but also misleading to followers who may take such declarations seriously.”

Critics accused Prophet Passion of using religion to glorify political figures, warning that such rhetoric undermines the integrity of the church and faith communities in Zimbabwe.

The comments quickly generated heated debate on social media, with many Zimbabweans expressing disbelief at the controversial declaration. Some users described the statement as “idol worship,” while others questioned why religious figures continue making extreme political pronouncements.

Despite the backlash, Prophet Passion had not publicly retracted or clarified his remarks at the time of publication.
