By A Correspondent – In Masvingo Province, the Young Farmers Group (YFG), operating under the Youth Empowerment and Skills Development Association (YESDA), has taken a leading role in fighting deforestation and rehabilitating degraded landscapes through a strategic partnership with the Forestry Commission. The collaboration supports Zimbabwe’s national reforestation programme, which aims to safeguard natural resources while helping communities benefit from the ecological and economic value of trees.

At the centre of YFG’s efforts are the Eco-Friendly Environmental Clubs (EFEC) established in schools throughout the province. These clubs provide young learners with hands-on experience in tree planting, orchard care, and nursery development, turning school grounds into vibrant green spaces. By integrating environmental education into everyday learning, the initiative prepares students to become responsible, informed custodians of their environment.

YFG has also introduced Village Environmental Clubs (VEC) in communities affected by deforestation, helping to revive woodlots and restore indigenous tree species. These clubs promote community ownership of local conservation efforts, encouraging sustainable practices that protect fragile ecosystems while offering vital resources such as fruit, firewood, and timber. By involving women, young people, and traditional leadership, the programme reinforces social unity and ensures broad participation in environmental restoration.

Through these combined efforts, YFG and the Forestry Commission are planting thousands of trees, curbing soil erosion, improving water retention, and boosting biodiversity. The initiative links environmental recovery with improved livelihoods, showing that conservation can be both practical and empowering.

This partnership highlights the powerful role of young people in tackling climate and environmental challenges. By mobilising communities, bridging generations, and aligning grassroots action with national goals, the Young Farmers Group is not only restoring forests but also restoring hope — proving that a greener, more sustainable future can grow from the ground up.
