Tinotenda Hove – MASVINGO – Mutendi High and Primary Schools in Masvingo are setting a shining example in sustainable development through their innovative Institutional Biogas Project, which aims to transform waste into clean and renewable energy.

With an enrollment of about 1,400 students, the two schools are currently constructing holding ponds for a biodigester that will convert organic waste into biogas for cooking and other energy needs. The project, once completed, will also allow the reuse of water from the biodigester to irrigate sports fields and school gardens — a move that promotes both water conservation and environmental stewardship.

Speaking during a recent tour of the facilities, members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Energy and Power Development commended the initiative as a model for other institutions across the country. The visit was part of the committee’s nationwide verification exercise to assess progress on renewable energy projects.

“This project demonstrates how schools can play a vital role in promoting renewable energy adoption and sustainability,” said one committee member. “By turning waste into a useful resource, Mutendi Schools are contributing to a cleaner environment while teaching students the importance of responsible energy use.”

The biogas initiative is expected to reduce dependence on traditional energy sources, lower operational costs, and equip students with practical knowledge about environmental conservation and sustainable technologies.

As Zimbabwe continues to promote green energy solutions, Mutendi High and Primary Schools’ biogas project stands as a testament to the power of innovation and education in driving the nation toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
