Tinotenda Hove- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s controversial constitutional changes have begun translating into concrete changes in Parliament, with 10 newly appointed senators taking their oaths of office on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

The appointments, made under provisions introduced through the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act, have brought a mixture of senior ZANU PF figures, former government officials and prominent personalities into the Senate.

Among those sworn in was businessman and ZANU PF Central Committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei.

The other appointees are Jabulani Sibanda, Mary Mliswa, Nokuthula Matsikinyere, Godwills Masimirembwa, Lucy Chitaga, retired General Gibson Mashingaidze, Makhosini Hlongwane, Brilliant Dube and Irene Mutumbwa.

Their arrival in Parliament marks another stage in the implementation of the constitutional amendments, which have attracted considerable controversy and criticism over their impact on Zimbabwe’s political and institutional landscape.

The government has also started implementing other provisions arising from the amended Constitution.

Among the measures already being pursued is the appointment and promotion of 14 judges under the revised constitutional framework, which changes aspects of the process governing judicial appointments and tenure.
