Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa made a grand entrance at the Harare International Conference Centre on Thursday for the Presidential Innovation Fair Awards, aiming to celebrate Zimbabwe’s inventive talent and promote Education 5.0. However, many critics argue that the event highlighted how disconnected the leadership is from the everyday struggles of citizens and innovators.
While the President praised the nation’s “forward-thinking” approach, observers pointed out that funding shortages, poor facilities, and bureaucratic hurdles continue to stifle genuine innovation. “The speeches are impressive, but the support on the ground is nearly nonexistent,” said one participant.
The event, intended to showcase Zimbabwe’s creativity, instead drew criticism for appearing more like a political performance than a genuine effort to foster progress. Analysts noted that while Mnangagwa took the spotlight, many local innovators remain frustrated and underserved, raising questions about whether the government’s promises will ever translate into meaningful change.
In the eyes of many, the awards ceremony became a display of optics over substance, reinforcing perceptions that political pageantry continues to overshadow the nation’s real developmental needs.
