Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza to lead Zimbabwe’s judiciary as Chief Justice, with the appointment taking effect on 15 May 2026.

Gwaunza, who has served as Deputy Chief Justice since 29 March 2018, will succeed Luke Malaba. Malaba stepped down after holding the top judicial post since March 2017.

The announcement was made by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Martin Rushwaya, who said the appointment was made under section 180(2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza meets all the requirements for the role,” Rushwaya stated, noting her seven years as Deputy Chief Justice and her broad experience on the bench.

Rushwaya also confirmed that Justice Paddington Garwe will step into the role of Deputy Chief Justice on the same date. Garwe has been a judge of the Constitutional Court since 20 May 2021 and brings significant judicial experience to the position.
