Tinotenda Hove – Harare – Comedian and socialite Leroy Zaware, widely known as Comic Elder, received a brand-new double cab this week from President Emmerson Mnangagwa, sparking both admiration and debate across the capital.

The surprise came at the closing ceremony of the National Youth Symposium in Harare. Comic Elder had the audience, including the President, in stitches with his jokes, and the laughter turned into applause when the President handed him the keys to the vehicle.

“I was just trying to make people laugh,” Comic Elder said, visibly overwhelmed. “I never expected this. I am truly grateful to His Excellency for this amazing gesture.”

While some viewed the gift as a boost for young talent, others questioned whether it blurred the line between recognition and favoritism.

Simba Chatikobo, a Harare resident, said, “It’s a nice gesture, but it makes you wonder if everyone with influence gets rewarded this way. Where is the line between support and patronage?”

Darly Ncube added, “It’s inspiring to see young talent recognised, but giving cars at official events raises questions about fairness.”

Charity Moyo remarked, “It’s encouraging for artists, but I hope this doesn’t set unrealistic expectations for others in creative industries.”

Raramisai Somerai was more critical: “It looks like patronage more than empowerment. There should be clearer ways to support young talent rather than giving cars at a ceremony.”

The event has sparked conversation about presidential gifts and public perception, highlighting the delicate balance between celebrating talent and maintaining transparency.

Despite the debate, Comic Elder’s new ride has undoubtedly become the talk of Harare, proving that sometimes, humor can lead to more than just laughter—it can bring unexpected rewards.
