Tinotenda Hove – Mhondoro, Zimbabwe – Hon Vengai Chivaura, a philanthropist and community leader, is using football as a platform to promote social responsibility and combat drug and substance abuse among young people in Mhondoro.
The initiative is carried out through the Marirangwe Soccer League (MSL), which features nine teams: Matongera, Canterbury Hunters, Maponga, Mnandi, Vahombe, Monera, Ngwendere, and Nyamweda – the league champions.
Speaking on Tuesday, Chivaura said: “We had a league winners title party on Saturday, 15 November 2025, celebrating Nyamweda football team’s victory. I gave soccer balls and jerseys to about six teams in this league that are in Mhondoro-Mubaira Constituency. I then gave extra soccer jerseys to Nyamweda for winning the league.”
He added: “We are using the power of sport to fight drug and substance abuse in Mhondoro and beyond. Our duty is to build socially responsible young people.”
The Marirangwe Soccer League demonstrates how grassroots football can positively engage youth, instill discipline, and foster community pride, while keeping young people away from harmful habits.
