Tinotenda Hove – Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in central Harare after he was caught impersonating a police officer and demanding bribes from unsuspecting motorists.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on 28 November 2025, when officers on patrol identified the suspect, Lloyd Chinhoyi, who was fully dressed in police uniform and appeared to be conducting roadside checks.

Upon closer inspection, the officers became suspicious of Chinhoyi’s conduct and immediately intervened. He was arrested on the spot after failing to provide proof of employment with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

Police say Chinhoyi had been stopping motorists and demanding payments under the guise of enforcing traffic regulations.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has since warned members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour, stressing that impersonating law enforcement officers is a serious offence that undermines public trust and security.

Chinhoyi is expected to appear in court soon facing charges of impersonating a police officer and extortion.
