Sports Correspondent – Highlanders FC has expressed gratitude to President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa and government for approving state-assisted funerals for six club supporters who lost their lives in a fatal road crash near Filabusi on Sunday.

The supporters were on their way back to Filabusi after attending Highlanders’ 2-0 win against Herentals at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo when tragedy struck, throwing the Bosso fraternity and the football community into mourning.

In an official statement, the Bulawayo giants called the government’s intervention a humane act that will give much-needed relief to grieving families as burial arrangements get underway.

The club said the passing of the six marked a deep loss, describing them as devoted members of the Highlanders family who had made the trip to rally behind the team.

“At Highlanders, our fans are not just spectators. They are part of us, part of the family. These six travelled with love and loyalty for the black and white colours, and their place in our history will always be remembered,” the club said.

Highlanders added that it stands in solidarity with the affected families during this painful time as plans for the funerals progress.

The state-assisted funeral declaration means government will cover burial costs for the victims, a move the club says will ease the burden on the families.
