Harare – Epworth South Member of Parliament, Tayedzwa, has thrown his full support behind the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Bill (CAB3), delivering a spirited defense that drew on biblical scripture, African tradition, and development milestones.

Tayedzwa began by reporting that nearly 20,000 people attended the public consultations in Epworth and Mabvuku-Tafara, with no one opposing the Bill.

“We engaged with residents from both Epworth South and Mabvuku-Tafara, with attendance nearing 20,000. I did not observe a single person opposing CAB3; rather, everyone was wholeheartedly supportive,” he said.

The Epworth South MP offered a creative defense of the seven-year electoral cycle proposal, citing biblical precedent and African tradition to argue that the number seven holds special significance.

“Biblically, we can refer to the story of Jacob who worked for seven years for his wives before ultimately being given the one he desired. The number seven resonates deeply with our lives and experiences,” Tayedzwa explained.

“In rural areas, for instance, home-brewed beer is prepared over a period of seven days, further reflecting the significance of this number. Additionally, when we consider the structure of time, we recognise that there are seven days in a week. Even in the creation narrative, God rested on the seventh day, signifying its holiness. This underscores the importance of the number seven in our lives and traditions.”

“So, in so doing, I suggest that the figure seven will take us to everything fruitful,” he declared.

Tayedzwa praised developments under President Mnangagwa, including the newly constructed Trabablas Interchange and the ongoing Mabvuku Interchange, noting that these projects have made travel easier for residents.

“Those coming from Chitungwiza no longer have to pass through the central business district; instead, they can travel through Epworth and then to Mabvuku. Similarly, residents from Ruwa can avoid passing through the CBD. This means that the burden on all these travellers has been significantly reduced,” he said.

He also noted improvements in Epworth, a community often stigmatized, under the Second Republic.

“In the past, it was often referred to as an area that harbours thieves. However, thanks to the leadership of His Excellency, E. D. Mnangagwa, we have witnessed significant developments, including the establishment of schools, roads and boreholes,” Tayedzwa said.
