HEADACHE…THE FACTS

By Fortunate Masikati- A headache is pain or discomfort in the head or neck. It is a common problem that can affect people of all ages.

There are different types of headaches. The common ones include:

  • Tension headache – the most common type, often caused by stress or tiredness.
  • Migraine – a severe headache that may come with nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or noise.
  • Cluster headache – a very painful headache usually felt around one eye. Causes of headaches include stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, infections, eye strain from phones or computers, and high blood pressure. Risk factors that increase the chances of headaches include skipping meals, drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, poor sleep, stress, and long hours on screens. Management and Prevention,
    people should:
  • Drink enough water
  • Eat regular meals
  • Sleep well
  • Reduce stress
  • Take breaks from screens
  • Exercise regularly Treatment , a person can rest in a quiet place, drink water, and take medication such as Paracetamol if advised by a health worker.
    However, seek medical help immediately if the headache is very severe, frequent, associated with vomiting, fever, blurred vision, weakness, or after a head injury. Complications poor concentration, sleep problems, medication overuse headaches, and sometimes may indicate serious illnesses like Meningitis or stroke. NB : Do not ignore persistent headaches. Early treatment helps prevent serious complications.
