Sports Correspondent – Highlanders FC have confirmed the tragic loss of seven of their supporters following a road accident that occurred on Friday along the Bulawayo–Gwanda highway.
The fans were reportedly travelling back from Barbourfields Stadium, where they had watched Highlanders play to a goalless draw against FC Platinum.
In an official statement, the club expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying, “Highlanders FC extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the seven supporters who tragically lost their lives on Friday evening.”
The club added that the accident happened as the supporters were making their way home after the match. “The accident occurred along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Road as they were returning from our match against FC Platinum,” the statement read.
Offering comfort to those affected, Highlanders said, “To the bereaved, we offer our sincere prayers, strength, and unwavering support during this incredibly difficult time.”
The club also paid tribute to the deceased supporters’ loyalty, noting, “May you find comfort in the love that surrounds you and in the memories of those we have lost. As a club, we stand with you in grief and solidarity. Their passion and dedication to the Black and White will forever be etched in our history.”
They concluded by saying, “May their souls rest in eternal peace.”
The tragedy comes at a time when Dynamos FC are also mourning with one of their loyal supporters, Ronald Mujuru, who recently lost his entire family in a separate road accident along the Harare–Masvingo highway.
The devastating crash claimed the lives of Mujuru’s wife and his five children as they were travelling to Zvishavane.
