Tinotenda Hove – Bellarmine “Chatunga” Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe, has returned to Zimbabwe following his deportation from South Africa.
The 28-year-old arrived in Harare on Wednesday evening, touching down at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport shortly after being expelled from the neighbouring country.
Earlier in the day, Mugabe had appeared before the Alexandra Magistrates Court, where he was ordered to pay a fine of R600,000 in connection with a shooting incident that took place in Johannesburg earlier this year. Following the court proceedings, authorities escorted him to OR Tambo International Airport, from where he was deported.
While Mugabe has now returned home, his cousin and co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, remains in South Africa after receiving a three-year prison sentence.
Initially facing attempted murder charges, Mugabe was ultimately convicted earlier this month on lesser charges of pointing a firearm at a South African national and violating immigration laws.
Matonhodze, however, was found guilty on multiple serious counts, including attempted murder, obstructing the course of justice, illegal possession of a firearm, and breaching immigration regulations, resulting in a significantly harsher penalty.
