In Eternal Memory of Assata Shakou
In the sacred circle of Afrikan heroines,
Assata Shakou rises — radiant, unyielding —
among the mighty spirits of Harriet Tubman,
Winnie Mandela, the Women Warriors of Dahomey,
and the countless known and unknown daughters of the Revolution.
Assata — mother of freedom’s children,
teacher to some young Afrikans in Cuba,
your breath is still the wind of dignity,
your smile, the sunrise of respect.
You have not died —
for the spirit that births liberation cannot perish.
You have only crossed the river,
to sit beneath the ancestral baobab,
where the drums of resistance never sleep.
The world feels your departure
as the fall of a sacred tree —
its roots deep in struggle,
its branches touching the stars of Black freedom.
And yet, through every leaf that trembles,
your voice returns —
clear as the call of morning
“𝑰𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒖𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒐𝒎.
𝑰𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒖𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒊𝒏.
𝑾𝒆 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓.
𝑾𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔.”
We hear you, Assata.
We rise with you, Assata.
We promise — the chains shall fall.
