By Tinotenda Hove – Top lawyer Lewis Uriri has turned down a top-of-the-range vehicle and US$100,000 cash that was promised to him and his spouse by controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, saying taking the presents would undermine his professional integrity.

Chivayo had on Monday taken to social media to announce the donation, showering praise on Uriri for previously representing him in court. According to his post, Uriri was to receive a 2026 Range Rover Sport Autobiography worth US$250,000 plus US$50,000 for fuel, while his wife, who is also a senior legal practitioner, was set to get US$50,000 in cash.

In a formal statement, Uriri, who is the founder and chairperson of Zimbabwe Temple Bar chambers, said both he and his wife had resolved not to accept any of the three offers.

He said the public announcement came as a surprise as there had been no prior communication or agreement, revealing that he has not done any legal work for Chivayo since their last interaction in June 2024.

“The past work highlighted in your tribute was done in my professional capacity and was fully paid for,” Uriri said in his reply. “I was remunerated for services I actually provided.”

Uriri stressed that the ethics governing the legal profession demand that lawyers uphold public trust and remain independent, adding that it was important to refuse any benefits that might give the impression of a continuing financial tie after a matter has been concluded.

Chivayo’s gesture is part of a well-publicised pattern of expensive cars and cash handouts to celebrities, church leaders and prominent personalities in the last two years, reportedly running into tens of millions of dollars.
