Harare- The Minister of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, today positioned Zimbabwe as a rising continental leader in data governance, during a ceremony marking key achievements in the nation’s digital regulatory framework.

Speaking at the 2nd Data Controller License Handover and the 6th Data Protection Officer (DPO) Certification event at Rainbow Towers, Mavetera declared these milestones “a defining moment” for Zimbabwe’s pursuit of a secure and inclusive digital economy.

Safeguarding the “Lifeblood of the Modern Economy”

In her keynote address, Mavetera emphasized the critical importance of responsible data management. “Data is the lifeblood of the modern economy,” Mavetera stated. “Yet, with great power comes great responsibility.”

She framed the licensing of Data Controllers and certification of DPOs as core to building a trusted digital environment. The minister commended the new license holders as “guardians of trust” with a pivotal role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of Zimbabweans online.

Homegrown Expertise Gains Continental Recognition

She highlighted the domestic success of the capacity-building programs led by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ revealing that POTRAZ was named the Runner-Up at the inaugural PICASSO Privacy Awards in Ghana, an event held just yesterday.

Furthermore, Zimbabwean-trained Data Protection Officers were recognized as “the most outstanding rising stars on data protection” at the same continental forum.

“The DPO Certification course is a flagship course which is the envy of the SADC Region and Africa at large,” Minister Mavetera said, expressing pride in the ICT sector’s achievements.

Government’s Commitment to a Secure Digital Future

She reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering ICT growth through “robust policies, strategic partnerships, and forward-looking legislation.” She outlined the broader goal of laying a foundation for a digital economy that is “secure, resilient, and inclusive.”

Mavetera concluded by reminding attendees that data protection is a continuous process requiring vigilance and collaboration. She called for upholding the highest standards to “position Zimbabwe as a leader in digital trust and innovation.”

Today’s ceremony signals Zimbabwe’s continued efforts to strengthen its digital governance structures in line with the Data Protection Act, as the nation seeks to bolster both citizen privacy and its standing in the regional digital economy.
