Zanu PF Raises US$9.5 Million For Conference As Zimbabweans Grapple With Economic Turmoil

Tinotenda Hove- ZANU PF has reportedly raised US$9.5 million at its Presidential Fundraising Dinner, surpassing its initial US$6 million target for the party’s upcoming National People’s Conference, in a development likely to intensify scrutiny of the ruling party’s fundraising drive amid persistent economic challenges facing ordinary Zimbabweans.

The fundraising dinner was held on Saturday night at the Hippodrome in Braeside, Harare, with the reported proceeds exceeding the original target by US$3.5 million.

The reported figure has raised questions about the scale of financial resources being mobilised for a political party conference at a time when many Zimbabweans continue to struggle with the cost of living, limited incomes and the daily expense of meeting basic household needs.

ZANU PF has yet to publicly account for the individual contributions making up the reported US$9.5 million or provide a detailed breakdown of how the money will be spent.

ZANU PF online activist Cleopas Mukungunugwa was among those associated with the online discourse surrounding the party’s fundraising activities.

The reported fundraising windfall also places the spotlight on the relationship between political financing and the economic realities confronting citizens, with questions likely to emerge over the sources of the money, the identities of major contributors and the expectations attached to their donations.

While ZANU PF exceeded its target by a substantial margin, the reported amount stands in sharp contrast to the financial difficulties experienced by households and small businesses across the country.

The party’s upcoming conference is expected to bring together thousands of delegates, officials and supporters, requiring substantial resources for accommodation, transport, logistics and other organisational expenses.

However, the reported US$9.5 million has placed the fundraising exercise under scrutiny, particularly over transparency and whether the public will be given a clear account of the money collected and its eventual use.
