Tinotenda Hove – A wave of sadness has swept through Hurungwe following the death of veteran opposition activist Mai Chigohwe, who was remembered as a fearless advocate for democratic change and a steadfast voice for her community.
The passing of the seasoned change champion was announced on Saturday morning by Mashonaland West Proportional Representation Member of Parliament Mutsa Murombedzi, who paid tribute to her contribution to the struggle for what he described as “a New Great Zimbabwe.”
“In Hurungwe, Mashonaland West we have lost Mai Chigohwe, a change champion par excellence, a fearless woman whose life was woven into the struggle for a New Great Zimbabwe,” said Murombedzi.
She reflected on the difficult political environment that has characterized parts of Hurungwe over the years, saying many residents had endured violence, intimidation and displacement.
“Hurungwe has long been scarred by political violence and intimidation. Villagers beaten, displaced and frogmarched into daily meetings under threat. Yet in the face of fear, Mai Chigohwe stood unshaken, carrying the people’s pain and defending their dignity with conviction,” she said.
Murombedzi described Mai Chigohwe as a courageous figure who remained committed to her principles despite the challenges faced by opposition supporters in the area.
She said Mai Chigohwe’s legacy would continue to inspire those pursuing democratic reforms and social justice.
“Her voice may be silent, but her courage still speaks. We honor her sacrifice. We carry forward her dream. A New Great Zimbabwe will rise because cadres like Mai Chigohwe gave everything,” she said.
Concluding her tribute, Murombedzi expressed sorrow at the activist’s passing, saying: “RIP champion. We are poorer without you.”
Mai Chigohwe’s death has been met with grief among fellow activists and supporters, many of whom remember her as a dedicated campaigner who stood firm in the face of adversity and remained committed to the cause she believed in throughout her life.
