Tinotenda Hove – ZANU PF has projected confidence ahead of Saturday’s Victoria Falls local authority by-elections, declaring itself ready to reclaim three council seats despite growing criticism over the circumstances that triggered the polls.

The by-elections follow the recall of former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillors Mthunzi Mpofu, Nkanyiso Sibindi and Daniel Moyo, a development that has remained politically contentious.

Speaking ahead of the vote, ZANU PF Matabeleland North provincial secretary for administration Douglas Khoza said the party had intensified its campaign in Wards 9, 10 and 11.
“Our ward campaign teams have been going door-to-door asking and encouraging residents of the three wards to come out in their numbers and vote for ZANU PF candidates on August 1, 2026,” Khoza said.

He also highlighted the involvement of senior party officials in the campaign, saying their visits had strengthened efforts to secure victory.
“The National Political Commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha came and addressed some rallies in the three wards, further strengthening our campaign. Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution and ZANU PF provincial chairman Richard Moyo attended the rallies as well,” he said.

Khoza insisted the ruling party expected to win all three wards, arguing that government projects undertaken in Victoria Falls since the 2023 harmonised elections had increased public support.

“These projects have created many employment opportunities for youths in Victoria Falls and surrounding areas,” he said.

However, critics argue that campaign promises centred on development have become a familiar feature of election periods, with opposition voices questioning whether residents have seen meaningful and lasting improvements in service delivery and local governance.

ZANU PF has nominated Tapiwa Kwendu Sibanda for Ward 9, Thindolie Sibanda for Ward 10 and George Mhlanga for Ward 11, where they will contest against independent candidates.
