Tinotenda Hove – A 50-year-old Zaka man suspected of killing two police officers has been sentenced to a combined 149 years in prison after appearing again at the Masvingo Magistrates Court where he faced numerous additional charges.

Daniel Munyanyi was brought before Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura on Wednesday and convicted on several counts that included armed robbery, attempted murder, theft and unlawful entry.

The court sentenced him to 77 years in prison for the latest offences. This comes just days after he had already received a 72-year jail term for six separate robbery cases, bringing his total sentence to 149 years.

However, Munyanyi’s prison term could increase significantly as he still faces two outstanding murder charges linked to the fatal shooting of two police officers three weeks ago.

During the latest trial, Magistrate Bepura found Munyanyi guilty on six counts of armed robbery, one count of attempted murder, six counts of theft and six counts of unlawful entry.

For the robbery charges, the court imposed 10 years on each of the six counts. He was also sentenced to seven years for attempted murder, while another 10 years were handed down for the offences covering theft and unlawful entry.

In delivering judgment, Magistrate Bepura said the offences were serious and described the accused as a major threat to the community due to his violent conduct.
