Tinotenda Hove- In what some have described as an uncommon display of political civility, Zanu PF’s Chikomba West legislator and ICT Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, on Friday expressed condolences following the tragic death of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MP for Nkulumane, Desire Moyo, who perished in a car accident near Shangani.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Hon. Desire Moyo, the Member of Parliament for Nkulumane under the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), who lost his life in a horrific road accident near Shangani,” Mavetera said in a statement.
“As a fellow Member of Parliament, I mourn the loss of a colleague who served his constituency with dedication and passion. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. We also wish a speedy recovery to the other Hon. members who were injured in the accident. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
While her message was widely shared on social media, some observers questioned whether such gestures signify genuine cross-party empathy or simply reflect the optics of political correctness in a deeply polarised environment. Zimbabwe’s political landscape has long been marked by hostility between ruling and opposition parties, and moments of public sympathy across the aisle are exceedingly rare.
Moyo’s Death and the Tragic Incident
According to early reports, Moyo was travelling with several other lawmakers — Honourables Madalaboy Ndebele, Senator Rittah Ndlovu, Sethulo Ndebele, and Libion Sibanda — when their vehicle reportedly struck an elephant near Shangani. Moyo was pronounced dead at the scene, while others sustained injuries and were rushed to the nearest hospital.
Advocacy group Bulawayo Kasi Lami also issued a statement mourning Moyo, describing him as “a true servant of the people” who “stood for us during good and bad times.”
As condolences pour in from across the political divide, some citizens are urging that such moments of shared grief be turned into genuine dialogue and cooperation beyond the confines of tragedy — a call that remains to be tested in Zimbabwe’s tense political climate.
