By A Correspondent -Women in Governance and Peacebuilding (WIGP) has noted the recent discovery of gold in the Bondolf area and the growing interest from local communities in artisanal mining activities. We recognize the importance of ensuring that natural resources contribute to sustainable livelihoods and community development.

WIGP calls upon the Government of Zimbabwe and all relevant authorities to prioritize the rights and participation of local women and young people in any decisions regarding the exploitation of these mineral resources. Communities that have lived on and protected this land should have fair opportunities to benefit from its natural wealth.

Women, who often bear the greatest burden of poverty and unemployment, should not be excluded from accessing mining opportunities, licenses, skills development, and other economic benefits. Any formalization or regulation of mining activities should include deliberate measures to promote women’s participation and protect them from discrimination, exploitation, and unsafe working conditions.

We further urge that decisions relating to the allocation of mining rights be guided by transparency, accountability, and fairness. Natural resources should be managed in a way that promotes inclusive local development and benefits the wider community rather than a small number of individuals.

WIGP remains committed to advocating for gender-responsive governance of natural resources, community participation in decision-making, and the equitable sharing of the benefits derived from Zimbabwe’s mineral wealth.
