Tinotenda Hove- The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested a Mutare kombi driver caught on camera assaulting an officer, as the force issued a stern warning to mahwindi and pirate taxi drivers against attacking police on duty.

“Reference is made to a video circulating on social media depicting a police officer being assaulted by a motorist at a service station,” the ZRP said in a statement.

The ZRP reports that “Brendon Tsakatsa (29) of number 1285 Chikanga 1, Mutare has been arrested for assaulting Constable Maxwell Mukumbuzi at a service station in Mutare on 29/06/26.”

Tsakatsa, known in transport circles as “Hwindi” — a common name for kombi and taxi drivers — is expected to appear in court soon.

Police said the assault reflects a worrying trend of attacks on officers by public transport operators who resist lawful instructions.

“The ZRP strongly warns kombi and pirate taxi operators, as well as all members of the public, against assaulting, resisting or obstructing police officers in the lawful execution of their duties,” the statement read.

“Such conduct constitutes a criminal offence and offenders will be arrested and brought before the courts without fear or favour.”

The police urged members of the public to use proper channels to complain instead of resorting to violence.

“Members of the public are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement officers and where they have grievances regarding police conduct, to seek redress through established channels rather than resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands.”

The ZRP said it will not tolerate attacks on its members and will continue to act decisively against anyone who undermines law and order.
