Tinotenda Hove – A heartbreaking tragedy struck in Buhera, Manicaland Province, after a 10-year-old boy lost his life when he was swept away by a flooded river while returning home from church on Sunday.

The child, identified as Tashinga Chirinda, had been walking with his mother, 35-year-old Memory Purazen, and his two siblings when they attempted to cross the overflowing Neramba River at approximately 1:45 pm. The river had become dangerously swollen following several days of persistent heavy rains in the area.

According to Acting Manicaland Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the family decided to try crossing the river despite the risks involved.
As they made their way into the water, the current proved too strong, and Tashinga was suddenly swept away, leaving his family helpless.

Purazen and her other children managed to hold onto nearby shrubs along the riverbank to avoid being carried away. The mother later swam to safety and quickly reported the incident to local authorities.

Police officers launched a search operation, and the boy’s body was later recovered downstream. His remains were taken to Murambinda Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
