Tinotenda Hove – Citizens Coalition for Change legislator Samantha Mureyani triggered heated scenes in Parliament on Thursday after openly backing the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill, drawing sharp reactions from fellow opposition MPs.

Mureyani was reportedly booed by several opposition lawmakers as she delivered her contribution to the debate, while ZANU PF legislators applauded her remarks.

Defending her position, the MP argued that the election of a president through Parliament was not unusual, saying other regional countries already use a similar system.

“I support the election of the President in Parliament. That model is being used in South Africa and Botswana,” Mureyani told the House.

She further claimed that presidential elections conducted through direct voting had previously contributed to instability and unrest in the country.
“Direct elections have in the past led to violence and lawlessness,” she said.

Her remarks immediately divided the chamber, with opposition MPs expressing anger over her stance while ruling party legislators welcomed her contribution during the contentious CAB3 debate.
