By A Correspondent -The Meteorological Services Department has warned that Zimbabwe will experience strong winds countrywide from Friday evening until Monday, with thunder and lightning likely in some areas.

In an advisory issued on 4 September 2026 together with the Department of Civil Protection, the MSD said the weather change will be caused by cool, moist south-easterly winds interacting with a mid-level atmospheric system. The conditions are expected to affect all provinces including Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo, Midlands, Manicaland, Masvingo, Harare and the Mashonaland provinces.

According to the department, Matabeleland North and the Mashonaland provinces should anticipate thunderstorms, lightning and rain on Friday and Saturday. Saturday will also be cloudy and cold, with light rain or drizzle possible in Chipinge, Chiredzi, Chimanimani and Nyanga.

The MSD cautioned that the strong winds could damage crops, bring down trees and structures, and pose a danger to boats, rigging and sails. Farmers were told that rain during grain filling and maturity can lower grain quality, while high moisture levels increase the risk of fungal diseases.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid sailing during storms and to postpone unnecessary trips. Households were advised to repair roofs, secure loose objects and trim overhanging branches. Farmers were told to protect crops using windbreaks or row covers and to ensure livestock have shelter, bedding and enough feed.

“Beginning Friday, 04 September through Monday, 07 September 2026, weather conditions across Zimbabwe are expected to shift,” the MSD said. “The public, especially farmers and vulnerable groups, is advised to take precautions against strong winds and lightning.”
