Tinotenda Hove – A renewed push to keep President Emmerson Mnangagwa in power until 2037 has gained traction after Zanu PF’s Harare provincial chairperson Godwills Masimirembwa publicly endorsed the proposal at a party rally in Epworth on Sunday.

Masimirembwa addressed thousands of supporters during the CAB3 commemorations, an event marking the signing of Constitutional Amendment No. 3. Businessman Joachim Chivhayo, known as G6, also attended the gathering.

Speaking to the crowd, Masimirembwa said extending Mnangagwa’s tenure was necessary to protect ongoing government programmes.

“We are saying he must stay in office until 2037 because we don’t want to interrupt development. This Constitutional Amendment came from the people, and our President is delivering,” he said.

The comments are expected to draw criticism from opposition parties and constitutional lawyers, who have repeatedly cautioned against moves to extend presidential terms beyond what the Constitution allows.

Calls for Mnangagwa to remain beyond 2028 have been growing louder in some sections of Zanu PF, at a time when national debate continues over leadership succession, democratic norms and respect for constitutional limits.

Masimirembwa’s remarks are likely to add fuel to an already heated conversation about Zimbabwe’s political direction, and the campaign by certain Zanu PF members to keep the President in office until 2037.
