Tinotenda Hove – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has swiftly congratulated Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election, despite widespread reports of irregularities and unrest surrounding the just-ended polls in Tanzania.
In an official letter dated November 2, 2025, Mnangagwa said the outcome of the election reflected “the trust and confidence that the people of the United Republic of Tanzania have in your visionary leadership and in the policies of the Party you lead, Chama Cha Mapinduzi.”
He added that Zimbabwe was ready to strengthen bilateral relations with Tanzania under Hassan’s continued leadership. “I would like to reaffirm my commitment to work closely with you, Your Excellency, to further strengthen and deepen the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between our two countries and peoples,” Mnangagwa wrote.
The Zimbabwean leader also expressed optimism about continued cooperation on regional and international platforms. “I look forward to continue working with you at the regional, continental and multilateral fora on issues of mutual interest and concern,” he said.
Critics, however, questioned the timing of Mnangagwa’s congratulatory message, describing it as premature given the controversy surrounding the Tanzanian election results. Opposition parties in Tanzania have rejected the outcome, citing reports of voter intimidation, ballot stuffing, and arrests of their polling agents.
Despite the mounting criticism, Mnangagwa maintained a diplomatic tone in his message, concluding, “Let me take this opportunity to wish you, Your Excellency, good health and success in leading your great country to prosperity.”
The endorsement has sparked debate across the region, with observers saying Zimbabwe’s stance mirrors its own history of contested elections and aligns closely with its ruling-party solidarity.
