By A Correspondent -The legacy of veteran educationist Thomas Nzengere Makanyire was honoured last Thursday in an emotional send-off at the Makanyire homestead in Chivasa Village, Gutu East, under Chief Chitsa.

Makanyire, 85, died on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Gutu Mission Hospital after a long battle with a chronic heart condition. He was buried on August 13, 2026.

The funeral drew former pupils, fellow teachers, church leaders, family and community members whose lives were touched by his more than 30 years in education.

Among the mourners were prominent former students: opposition leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa, ZBC Chief Executive Officer Sugar Chagonda, Professor Tatira, and Rev Judah Mashamba. Also in attendance was Rufaro High School headmaster Jameson Shumbanhete, Makanyire’s nephew.

Tributes described Makanyire as a strict disciplinarian, mentor, and builder of character who believed in academic excellence and personal responsibility.

*A Life Devoted To Teaching*

Makanyire began his schooling at Fletcher High School from 1962 to 1967. He went on to the University of London, earning a Bachelor of Arts Honours between 1968 and 1970. He later obtained a Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Rhodesia in 1972.

His teaching career started at Makumbe High School, where he taught from 1973 to 1979. He then moved to Gutu High School, serving from 1982 to 1989 and rising to Deputy Headmaster.

From 1990 to 1996 he led Alheit Mission High School as headmaster. It was at Alheit where he taught and guided several students who later became national figures, including Chamisa and Chagonda.

He closed out his career at Nerupiri Given High School, serving as headmaster until he retired in September 2011.

Other notable students he taught include George Charamba, Dr Anxious Masuka, Professor Amon Murwira, Dr Marume, and Gutu East MP Zvarevashe Masvingise.

*Family Man And Mentor*

Beyond the classroom, Makanyire was remembered as a patriarch. He is the father of journalist Honest Makanyire. He is survived by four children, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife passed away in 2019.

Speakers at the funeral said his impact cannot be measured only by the schools he led, but by the generations of learners he shaped across Masvingo and beyond.

From Fletcher to London, and back to classrooms in Zimbabwe, Makanyire’s journey reflected a lifelong commitment to molding young minds.

For colleagues, students and relatives who gathered to bid him farewell, his legacy endures in the discipline, values and achievements of those he taught.
