Tinotenda Hove – A 28-year-old man from Zvishavane in the Midlands Province has been arrested in connection with the death of his six-year-old niece, allegedly following a violent assault.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) identified the suspect as Takudzwa Wellington Chimutsa. Police say the incident occurred on Sunday after the child reportedly failed to write her name. It is alleged that Chimutsa assaulted the girl, leading to a rapid decline in her health.
As her condition worsened, the suspect allegedly sought assistance from a local prophet, who advised the family to return home. The child was later taken to Zvishavane District Hospital, where she died shortly after admission. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
In a separate and unrelated incident, a 13-year-old girl from the Marange area was left with serious injuries after being subjected to abuse by a relative.
The victim, identified as Dorris, is a pupil at Chegore Secondary School. She was accused of stealing US$20, an allegation she reportedly denied. Despite this, she was allegedly punished in a cruel manner, resulting in severe burns to her back.
The incident is said to have occurred earlier this month. The teenager remains in significant pain as a result of her injuries. Police have not yet confirmed whether arrests have been made in connection with the second case, but the matter has been reported and is under investigation.
