Sports Correspondent – A prominent Ghanaian traditional healer says he was responsible for Harry Kane’s off-night in England’s World Cup 0-0 draw with Ghana.
Nana Kwaku Bonsam, which means “Devil of Wednesday,” told reporters he deliberately targeted the England captain to help the Black Stars.
After the game, Bonsam said his work was finished and he would lift the spell on the Bayern Munich forward.
“I am the most powerful spiritualist in the whole world. Now, I am going to release Harry Kane so that, in his next match, he can score,” Bonsam said.
Bonsam did not wait until after the match to take credit. He went public with his plan before kickoff, telling the Daily Star he would use spiritual methods to blunt one of football’s deadliest strikers.
“I am working on Harry Kane. I have shown what I am capable of before, so I know what work I must do to stop him. I am very famous for my predictions,” he stated.
He added that his intention was not to cause serious harm.
“I am not wishing him serious injury. It will be just enough to stop him [from scoring against] my country. I will do my work so that it can help Ghana.”
This is not the first time Bonsam has claimed to interfere with a global star at a World Cup. In 2014 he said he caused Cristiano Ronaldo’s knee tendinitis in Brazil, when Portugal and Ghana were drawn in the same group. Ronaldo recovered to play and score, but both nations went out in the group stage.
With Bonsam now saying Kane has been “released,” England manager Thomas Tuchel and Three Lions supporters will be looking for their all-time leading scorer to rediscover his finishing as the knockout rounds loom.
