A construction worker died on the spot while two of his colleagues were injured after a roof collapsed at a building site in Shamva Town Centre on Tuesday, 16 December.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe identified the deceased as Brighton Francis, a resident of Overspill, Epworth.

The incident occurred at Stand Number 4471 in Shamva Town Centre, where Francis and two other workers were carrying out construction work on a private building owned by Richard Ngwerume (47), of 420 LDV, Shamva.

According to Inspector Mundembe, Francis had climbed onto a scaffold to work on the roof when it suddenly gave way, causing him to fall to the ground.

“He was struck by a metal pole during the collapse and died instantly,” said Insp Mundembe.

Two other workers, Stephen Chipupuro (25) and Takawira Nyikayaramaba (45), both from Overspill, Epworth, sustained injuries after being hit by falling debris. Chipupuro suffered cuts below his right eye and on his right leg, while Nyikayaramaba sustained a cut to his right leg.

The injured men were rushed to Shamva District Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Police said all three men were employed as general workers by Finder Construction Group, a Harare-based construction company.

The body of the deceased was taken to Shamva Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police have ruled out foul play, and investigations into the incident are continuing.
