Tinotenda Hove- FIFA has increased Themba Zwane’s suspension from one match to three matches after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that his dismissal warranted additional punishment for “serious foul play.”
The decision has sparked frustration within South African football circles, with the South African Football Association (SAFA) reportedly considering an appeal against the ruling.
Hugo Broos, head coach of South Africa national football team, strongly disagreed with both the red card and the extended suspension, insisting the punishment was excessive.
“First of all, I think the red card is too severe. I saw the situation, and I don’t think it was a red card,” Broos said.
The veteran coach also compared Zwane’s incident to a recent challenge involving Lionel Messi, questioning FIFA’s consistency in officiating decisions.
“When I see what happened with Messi yesterday, I certainly don’t agree. There was not even a VAR with Messi,” he added.
Broos’ remarks are likely to fuel further debate over refereeing standards and disciplinary consistency as Bafana Bafana prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures.
