By A Correspondent- European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe Katrin Hagemann has died unexpectedly at the age of 53, bringing to an abrupt end her diplomatic assignment in the country.

Hagemann is reported to have fallen ill after having breakfast at her residence in Harare.
According to diplomatic sources, her driver discovered her unresponsive when he arrived at the house on Thursday morning to take her to work.

The German diplomat had only recently assumed leadership of the EU Delegation in Zimbabwe. She took up the position in December 2025 after formally presenting her credentials to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The EU Delegation confirmed her death on Friday, describing it as sudden and unexpected.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the sudden and unexpected passing of Her Excellency Ms Katrin Hagemann on September 3, 2026,” the delegation said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues and all those who mourn this profound loss. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, there will be no further comments at this time.”

Hagemann had a long diplomatic career spanning German and European institutions. She started out at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office before joining the Secretariat of the Council of the European Union in 2006.
Following the creation of the European External Action Service in 2011, she became part of the EU’s diplomatic service.

Her previous assignments included heading the Political Section of the EU Delegation to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community between 2015 and 2019. In 2019, she moved to Kenya, where she served as deputy head of the EU Delegation.

During her relatively short tenure in Zimbabwe, Hagemann highlighted the importance of strengthening economic relations between the EU and Zimbabwe, particularly in trade and investment.
