Harare – The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has officially announced that the September National Clean-Up Day will be held on Friday, 4 September 2026, under the theme, “A Clean Environment, Everyone’s Responsibility.”

According to a notice released by EMA, the national clean-up campaign will serve as the grand opening for “Clean-Up Zimbabwe Month,” setting the national tone for 30 days of heightened environmental awareness, waste reduction drives, and pollution control campaigns.

The agency is calling on communities, businesses, institutions, and members of the public to take part in the initiative, emphasizing that “the critical role every individual must play towards the attainment of a clean environment” cannot be overstated.

While the national event on 4 September is the focal point, EMA highlighted that the broader month-long campaign seeks to build momentum toward the World Clean-Up Day scheduled for 20 September 2026.

The initiative aims to go beyond simply collecting waste. EMA is encouraging citizens to “prevent littering, reduce waste generation, separate waste at source, recover recyclables and dispose of waste responsibly.” Particular emphasis has been placed on addressing plastic pollution and other problematic waste streams.

The agency issued a stern call to all stakeholders to turn the clean-up effort into a lasting commitment to maintaining clean surroundings, rather than a one-off activity.

“Don’t create a dirty environment to clean it rather keep the environment clean after the clean-Up,” the notice stated.

EMA stressed that a clean Zimbabwe cannot be achieved through government efforts alone. Instead, it requires the active participation of individuals, businesses, communities, and institutions, reiterating that “Cleaning is Everyone’s Responsibility.”

“As Zimbabwe observe the September National Clean-Up Day and also joins the global clean-up movement, the message is clear: we all have a role to play in keeping Zimbabwe clean,” the agency concluded.
