Tinotenda Hove – Authorities in South Africa have rejected a proposal that could have seen Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe deported after pleading guilty to immigration-related offences, insisting instead that he must stand trial on more serious charges.

Mugabe, who is jointly accused alongside Tobias Matonhodze, is facing multiple charges including attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and immigration violations.

The matter returned to the Alexandra Regional Court, where prosecutors dismissed a plea deal put forward by Mugabe’s legal team. The proposal sought to have him admit guilt on immigration charges in exchange for deportation and a suspended sentence.

However, the State declined the offer, effectively shutting down hopes of an early resolution and confirming that the case will proceed through the courts.

The charges arise from a shooting incident that allegedly took place in February at a residence in the Hyde Park area.

With the plea deal off the table, Mugabe and his co-accused are now expected to fully answer to the charges as the trial process continues.
