Harare – Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Sengezo Tshabangu, on Friday dismissed as “false and malicious” a news report claiming he had signaled conditional support for the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Bill (CAB3).
In a press statement, Tshabangu said he never spoke to NewsDay Live or any of its journalists regarding the party’s position on the proposed constitutional changes.
“The NewsDay article is littered with falsehoods and malicious information,” Tshabangu said. “Any attribution of statements, positions, or negotiations to me or the party through this publication is baseless and false.”
The NewsDay Live report, published on 27 May 2026, was titled “CCC’s Tshabangu signals conditional support for CAB3”.
Tshabangu said the CCC would make its position public only after the Bill is formally introduced in Parliament and following internal party consultations.
“Our position on the Bill will be placed in the public domain in due course, after the Bill is introduced in Parliament, and following the conclusion of ongoing internal consultations in accordance with our party’s processes,” he said.
Tshabangu cautioned that all members of Parliament carry a national duty to make “sober and rational decision-making in the best interests of Zimbabwe”, and that constitutional decisions must be guided by the will of the people.
“Otherwise, it should be understood that every Member of Parliament carries a national duty and responsibility that demands sober and rational decision-making in the best interests of Zimbabwe and its citizens.
Parliamentary decisions on constitutional matters must be guided by the will of the people as a product of party and parliamentary consultative processes.”
He revealed that the CCC would also await the report of the relevant portfolio committee, which will collate views from public hearings and written submissions to Parliament.
He urged the public to disregard “unfounded and false media reporting” on the matter and to rely only on the CCC’s official communication channels.
“Accordingly, the public is urged to disregard unfounded and false media reporting on this matter and to rely on the party’s official communication issued by its designated channels.”
